Throughout the process of painting my mural, I have encountered many challenges and difficulties. It forced me to think outside the box and pursue something that I was not entirely comfortable with, even though I learned a lot from it. Innovation time was meaningful to me because it gave me one day a week in which I could pursue something different and unique. I would have never been able to make the impact that I have made on the school if it were not for innovation time. The mural that I painted will hopefully be standing there for many years. I think that inspiring children in the elementary and middle schools to pursue new opportunities is very important, and that is what I felt was most meaningful about my innovation project. I will be posting one more blog post including a link to my TED talk along with a finished picture of the mural.

This past weekend, I painted on Sunday morning. The day was not overly productive, but I did get a bit done. The faces of every single person are done now, so all I have to do is paint their bodies, which can be done with help from others. I noticed spots on the wall where the other paint was chipping; it looked like someone had picked it off or kicked the wall. I will plan to fix that and finish the rest of the three bodies in the next two weeks!
This past Sunday, I continued work on my mural with a little help from Kameron Haley. I sketched the faces of the rest of the boys that have to be painted, and painted some arms, legs, clothing, and eyes. I did not have that much time to paint, but I really want to finish by May 6. I feel if I paint this Thursday and Sunday as well as next Thursday and Sunday, I will be able to finish. Also, a few parents were concerned with certain aspects of my mural. If they would have read my blog, they would understand that the two people in the mural are two people growing up in the catholic schools. I am planning on making an artist statement to place beside the mural so that people understand what my vision was while painting.
Over spring break, I did a lot of work on the mural. I spent last Sunday, Monday, Wednesday, and this past Sunday painting. My original goal was to have the entire side of girls done after spring break, which I accomplished! I also got a couple boys started on the other side. This was truly a lot of work, but I could not have done it without a little help. Throughout the week, I had Meagan Casterline, Bryce Withers, Jack Bohannon, Jordan Snyder, and my sister Alex Pessetti help me fill in the clothing of multiple people, as well as outlining the clothing in Meagan's case. It is also really cool to see parishioners after mass while I am painting. Most of them seem to like the idea and the mural, so I am glad it is going well! Unfortunately, I cannot upload a video of my progress, so I will make sure to show pictures in my next post!
Sorry to disappoint, but I do not have any pictures to show this week. I would like to finish the middle of the mural before I put any more pictures up! My painting was cut a little short this week because I was participating in a service project during innovation day on Thursday and I was unable to paint today. However, I will plan on making a lot of progress in the next couple of weeks, especially during spring break! It is really coming along, and I look forward to seeing the finished product!
This past week, I spent both Thursday and Sunday painting my mural. I thought that I wouldn't finish before the school year ended. However, after painting for these past few days, I have realized that it is very possible. I have painted about one and a half people so far. My friend Kenny helped me on Sunday, and it was nice to have someone else there helping. I am no longer in the suck; I am very excited to keep going with the mural! Once I finish two people, I will post a picture of how it is coming along. This will most likely be next week!
This past week, I found a color called "String of Pearls" that matches the wall pretty well. It helped cover up the parts in which the paint was peeled off when I removed the tack strips. Since this paint had to dry, it was the only thing I could do to the mural. Time is catching up on me, and I need to get painting done fast. I hope to spend almost all of spring break painting and finishing this mural. I am trying to stay out of "the suck" by keeping myself motivated with small goals, such as getting one person done per week.
This past week, I was unaware that innovation day had been moved to Wednesday, so I did not get a chance to paint. However, I did do some thinking about how long this project was actually going to take. I expect about one day to sketch 1 and a half people, and with there being 10 people, that would be 7 days of just sketching. That would take me into spring break, and I would not even have the people painted yet. I decided that I will have to work on Sundays and possibly during spring break in order to finish this project in the amount of time before I graduate. Also, I may ask Mrs. Krajewski, my first hour teacher, if I can miss her class on Thursdays (which is the new innovation day). This will give me more time to paint and sketch out the mural so that I can finish in time.
This past week, I did not do much to the mural in the aspect of painting. I determined which color of paint would match the cream colored wall the best, and I will get the paint on Thursday. This past Friday, I sketched the senior girl in the middle of the mural. I began to sketch the senior boy when I had realized he was too tall. I made him a bit smaller so that it would fit under the title. We do not have school this Friday, so I will have to continue the mural next week. Next week, I plan to paint the spots where the paint had been chipped off the walls. Hopefully I will also be able to paint the first girl also, but I will have to play it by year.
This week was a bit uneventful. During innovation time, I could not go over to paint because I had to take down the tack strips before I actually started painting again. On Sunday, my dad and I went to remove the tack strips with some help from Kameron Haley. It took a little longer than expected, but we got all of the putty off of the walls. Some of the white paint had chipped off of the walls when we were removing the putty, and this color did not match the white that I had already bought. In order to fix this problem, I went to Lowes and got every single white and off white paint sample to see which one will fit the best. I will compare these samples to the wall next Friday to see which will be best to cover up the chipped paint. I will also start sketching out the people so that I can begin painting them sometime soon.
